David Schneuer – an artist whose life and work are one complete creation

David Schneuer (1905–1988) was a painter, stage designer, and graphic artist with a unique vision, who combined in his work the turbulent spirit of early 20th-century Europe with the dream of Zionist fulfillment in the Land of Israel. His works, ranging from German Expressionism to local modernism, embody emotional power, virtuoso control, and a rare ability to document and give meaning to life itself.
A journey that began in Galicia and reached the Land of Israel
Schneur was born in the Galician city of Przemysl and grew up in Munich, in the heart of a traditional Jewish culture that merged with European city life. His artistic talent was already evident in his childhood, which led him to study art in Munich. But alongside the cultural inspiration of the golden age of German Expressionism, his life was deeply influenced by the historical upheavals of the period.
In 1933, following the Nazi rise to power, Schneur was arrested as a political prisoner in the Dachau concentration camp. After his early release, he managed to escape to Israel via Prague, carrying with him a few posters and paintings that became living testimony to a lost world.
Tel Aviv – New creation in a new place
Upon his arrival in Israel, Shneur settled in Tel Aviv and was one of the founders of the "Association of Hebrew Painters for Applied Graphics in Israel." He worked as a graphic artist and stage designer, but over the years he devoted himself to painting and drawing, creating hundreds of works that combine the influences of European expressionism with a unique local vision.
Shneur's works are characterized by a high level of sensitivity and breathtaking technical mastery. He used strong contours and vibrant colors, giving his works a sense of movement and life. In his paintings, he documented the world around him - whether it was daily life in the developing Tel Aviv, historical events, or intimate moments of humanity.
An artist of emotion and control
Schneur was recognized as one of the greatest artists of his generation, and received much acclaim. Israel Prize laureate Yona Fischer described him as "a virtuoso, sensual and intuitive writer," while Danny Karavan compared his mastery of lines and colors to a violinist producing perfect tones from his strings.
Schneur's legacy
David Shneur created art that lives and breathes the story of his life and the story of an entire generation. His works are displayed in numerous collections and museums around the world, serving as a bridge between past and future, between tradition and innovation.
