Shlomo Katz

Shlomo Katz (1937–1992) was an extraordinary Jewish-Israeli artist whose artistic legacy combines the depth of Jewish tradition with extraordinary technical innovation. Katz was born in Lodz, Poland, and immigrated to the Land of Israel in 1945, after World War II. His life and work express the story of the Jewish people – tradition, memory, and renewal.
Katz was educated on Kibbutz Mishmar HaEmek, and already as a child he demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent. After completing his artistic studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he developed a unique artistic language influenced by medieval icons and oriental miniatures. His style, which combines the past with the modern, made him one of the most respected Jewish artists of his time.
A unique technique that has become a hallmark
Shlomo Katz developed a unique technique of painting with oil paints on gilded metallic surfaces. His works shine with a special light that combines spiritual depth with breathtaking visual beauty. The culmination of this technique can be seen in the works he created for the United States Air Force Academy Chapel in Colorado Springs, where he created nine spectacular paintings that are a testament to his artistic power and the spiritual connection that was at the heart of his work.

Later, Katz translated this technique into advanced screen printing, using metallic inks that created brilliant and impressive works. His works such as "The Ten Plagues" and the Passover Portfolio have become emblematic of contemporary Jewish art, reflecting values of memory, faith, and optimism.
Jewish art embraces the world
Shlomo Katz has exhibited his works in a variety of exhibitions around the world, and his works are included in leading collections, including the Wolfson Museum of Judaism in Jerusalem, the National Gallery of Australia, the Museum of Jewish Art in Paris, the Jewish Museum of Australia in Melbourne, the Jewish Museum of Hungary, and the Sephardic Synagogue in New York.

A living and inspiring legacy
Shlomo Katz was an artist who connected generations and cultures, between past and future. His works express the power of art to connect, heal and remind us of the beauty of Jewish tradition. In our gallery we are proud to present his works and continue his artistic legacy, which has become a timeless cultural asset.

Shlomo Katz – art that lives and breathes the story of Judaism and the infinite beauty of the human spirit.
